Band Aid 30 – Do They Know It’s Christmas 2014

Sir Bob Geldof has once again rallied a crop of artists to get together and record Do They Know it’s Christmas? A charity single recorded thrice before to aid poverty in Africa. The original 1984 version, written by Geldof and Midge Ure, was a massive hit that raised money for the famine in Ethiopia. Two subsequent versions, in 1989 and 2004 were just as huge. This time around, proceeds go towards eradicating the Ebola virus. It’s a We Are The World style congregation that keeps getting together. Critics of this movement call it the artistic equivalent of White Savior Industrial Complex (which it can seem honestly). Admirers call it a great example being set by famous names to give back and be selfless.

The lineup includes Bono, Sinead O’ Connor, Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith, Bastille, Paloma Faith, Emeli Sande, YouTubers Joe Sugg and Zoella, and in a beautifully pleasant surprise, Angelique Kidjo! Queen’s Roger Taylor joins them on drums.
