John Lewis’ New Christmas Ad Campaign Is Emotional Even By Their Standards

The United Kingdom doesn’t do Thanksgiving, hence November is when Christmas campaigning begins. So in between listening to holiday season singles and anticipating a new X Factor champ, the Brits are entertained by another annual tradition: The John Lewis Christmas Commercial.

John Lewis is a department store franchise whose namesake founder opened a humble drapery shop in 1864 and unknowingly gave birth to a retail mammoth. It is however a mammoth with heart, lots of it. It thrives on the unique philosophy that their items are ‘never knowingly undersold’ and if you buy the same thing elsewhere at a cheaper price, they WILL refund the cash difference!

Among the slew of Holiday Season promotional campaigns every year, John Lewis creates a tv spot that tugs at your heartstrings. The winning formula is a relationship story told well for its timeframe , and is innovative. The music used is always an older song covered by a contemporary British artist that will most likely break out and become a standalone chart hit.

This year, they’ve outdone themselves:

We love kids, we love penguins, we definitely love kids and penguins together. We love presents, friends, and John Lennon’s songwriting. Everything we love wrapped neatly in a Christmas bow. This one is emotional in its own beautiful way. Gonna go wipe tears now. Remember the hashtag #MontyThePenguin, how awesome is the name Monty for a penguin!
